When is the Best Time to Move or Buy a House?
Buying a new home can be both frightening and exhilarating, even if you have a solid income stream and enough flexibility and slack in your budget to afford the property. Since the decision to purchase a home will affect your life (and your business and your family) in so many ways, do not make it lightly or impulsively. Before you sign your loan paperwork and call a packing and moving company, ask yourself the following questions to determine whether the time is right.
Do you know what you can afford?
Home ownership is not cheap, particularly (and famously) in the Bay Area. In addition to your mortgage, you will also pay property taxes, maintenance expenses and insurance premiums. Make sure you know how much you can afford before you start shopping, and give yourself room in your budget to afford your home based on conservative estimates for future income and expenses.
Are you prepared logistically?
Whether you buy or rent, you will need to be logistically prepared for the move. This may involve hiring a long distance moving company, forwarding your mail, renting a temporary storage unit and much more. Itemize all of these logistical concerns before pulling the trigger.
Are you familiar with the area?
Before you buy a home in any town or neighborhood, you need to take the time to familiarize yourself with the local area and culture, especially if it’s a long distance move. Be sure to research the schools, employment opportunities, recreational activities, crime rate and any other characteristics that may influence your decision.
Do you understand the process?
The process of bidding on, buying and taking possession of a home can be complicated. Don’t call the moving company until you are comfortable with all of the steps in this process. With a solid, well-thought-out plan in place for how to make the transition, you’ll feel more comfortable.
